Gideon Episode 1: Hiding in the Winepress

Episode 1 of the Gideon arc. God finds a scared young man hiding in a winepress and calls him valiant warrior, showing kids that God sees who they can become, not just their fear.

For Parents

If your kid is walking into a new school year feeling little, this one is for them. Episode one of our Gideon arc meets a young man hiding in a pit, sure he is nobody special, at the exact moment God calls him valiant warrior. It shows kids that the way they feel about themselves is not the same as the way God sees them. On the drive, ask your kid what makes them feel small right now, and remind them God calls them by who they can become, not by their scared day.

The One Thing for the Ride

Questions Kids Ask

Why was Gideon hiding in the winepress?

Gideon was threshing wheat down in a winepress, a pit dug for stomping grapes, because he was terrified the Midianites would spot his grain and steal it, just as they had raided Israel's crops for seven years. That is the exact moment the angel of the Lord appeared and called him valiant warrior (Judges 6:12). God was not describing the scared young man in the pit. He was describing who Gideon was going to become.
