Know the Bible, Live the Bible: Jesus and Eternal Life

Hey, carpool crew, whether you're grabbing your backpack, riding shotgun, or finishing up your cereal, I'm Pastor Justin, and I'm so glad you're here. All month long we've been talking about questions people ask Jesus, and today it has a little twist to it. A man asked Jesus a super important question. What must I do to inherit eternal life? That's just a fancy way of asking how can I be with God forever? But instead of giving an answer, Jesus did what the best teachers do. He asked a question back, what is written in the law? How do you read it? That's in Luke chapter 10, verse 26. When Jesus said the law, he meant the first five books of the Bible, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books had God's instructions for how to live, how to love others, and how to worship God. The people listening to Jesus would've studied these books their whole lives. So Jesus was basically saying, you've read God's word. What do you think it says? And the man gave a great answer. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus smiled, I bet, and said, yep. Now go and live it. The one thing I want you to remember on the ride today is to read the Bible and let it shape your choices. Jesus was teaching something big. He was teaching about eternal life, how to inherit eternal life, to be with God forever. And it's not just about knowing the Bible. It's about living it. When we read God's word and ask, what does this mean for my life? It starts to change how we think, how we speak, and how we treat others at school and at home, on the playground, at church, on our sports team, really everywhere. Let me tell you about my son. My son was reading his Bible at bedtime and came across the verse, be kind and compassionate to one another. That's in Ephesians chapter four, verse 32. The next day at school, someone bumped into him and didn't say sorry. He felt his face get hot. He was about to say something mean back, but then he remembered that verse. What was it again? Oh yeah. Be kind and compassionate to one another. So instead he took a breath and chose kindness. That's what the Bible does. It's not just a book. It's a guide, like a map or a GPS for making good decisions and becoming more like Jesus in our everyday life. I want you to remember this. Read your Bible. Let it shape your choices. Jesus wants you to ask questions. He wants you to read his word, to find answers, and then to live it out with love, with honesty, with truthfulness. You can do this, friends. I know it. I know you're gonna have a great day today, and there's gonna be so many chances to do what we just talked about. Thanks for riding with me.
