If Jesus Set Me Free, Why Do I Still Have to Follow Rules?

A kid-friendly answer to why freedom in Jesus still comes with rules. Jesus set you free to love God and love others, and the rules are not a cage. They are the water you were made to swim in, showing you how to live the way God designed.

For Parents

Your kid pushes back on a rule and asks the question underneath it: if I'm free, why do I still have to obey? This episode hands them a picture they can hold, that a fish is most free in the water it was made for, not flopping on the carpet. After you listen, pick one rule your kid grumbles about and try doing it on purpose together. You do not have to win the argument. Helping them see the love behind the rule is the win.

Questions Kids Ask

Why do I have to follow rules if Jesus set me free?

Jesus did not set you free to do whatever you want. He set you free to love God and love others, and His rules show you how to do that well (Galatians 5:13). Think of a fish: it is free in the water, swimming the way it was made to, but a fish flopping on the carpet with no rules is not more free, it is in trouble.
