Scared of Losing a Pet? What Jesus Would Say

Part of the October What Would Jesus Say series. For kids who lost a pet or are scared of losing one. Pastor Justin walks them through John 11:35 (the shortest verse in the Bible: 'Jesus wept'), names that Jesus took time to feel sadness with his friends, and lands them in the truth that grief over a pet matters to God because what matters to your kid matters to him.

For Parents

If your kid is grieving a pet (a dog, a cat, a goldfish, a hamster) or is dreading the day they lose one, this episode meets them there. Pastor Justin walks them through John 11:35, the shortest verse in the Bible, and lands them in the truth that Jesus cried with his friends when grief filled the air. He cares about what your kid cares about. After it ends, sit close and let them name what they loved.

Key Takeaways

Try This Week

  1. Talk to Jesus about it. 'Jesus, I miss my pet. I am really sad. Will you help me feel better?'
  2. Celebrate your pet's life. Write down your favorite memories. Draw a picture (or 50). Say a thank you prayer for the good times.
  3. Tell someone how you're feeling. A parent, a friend, a leader at church. Jesus made us to carry sorrow together, not alone.

Talk It Over

What's one thing you loved about a pet you had, and how can you thank God for that memory today?

Questions Kids Ask

What does the Bible say to a kid who is sad about losing a pet?

The shortest verse in the Bible is Jesus wept, and it shows us that Jesus cried when someone he loved died and grief filled the air (John 11:35). That means when your heart hurts after losing a pet, Jesus does not tell you to move on or cheer up, he sits with you and cares because he cares about everything that matters to you. It is okay to be sad and to cry, and it helps to thank God for the good memories and tell someone how you are feeling.
