The Power of the Right Words at the Right Time

Hey, carpool crew. Whether you're riding to school, thinking about something you wish you hadn't said yesterday or something you should have said, I'm Pastor Justin and I'm so glad you're here. We've been spending every day this month learning from Proverbs for your school life, and today's verse is about something we all need help with: when to speak, what to say, and how to say it. Our verse today is from Proverbs chapter 25, verse 11. It says, "A word spoken at the right time is like gold apples in silver settings." Okay, so let me paint the picture for this verse. Imagine a beautiful piece of art, shiny gold apples, perfectly placed in a silver bowl or tray. It's valuable, it's beautiful, it's meaningful. Solomon says when you say the right words at the right time, it's like that. It hits different. It's powerful. It's beautiful, and it's meaningful. So think about this: saying something kind when someone's feeling down, that's gold. Encouraging your friend before a test, that's gold. Knowing when not to joke around or when to hold back that humor, that's also gold. But saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, that's like spilling chips on a white carpet and then stepping on them. It's messy, it's unnecessary, it's very difficult to clean up. Your words aren't just noise, friends. They're powerful tools. God wants to use them really, really well. See, if Jesus saw you about to fire off a mean comment, or watching someone who clearly needed encouragement not get it, he might say, "Wait for the right moment and speak with love." That's where wisdom lives. See, Jesus always knew the perfect time to speak and when to stay silent. You see someone in the hallway who looks upset, you could just keep walking, or you could say, "Hey, everything okay?" That moment might seem small to you, but to them it could be exactly what they needed. One quick line, the right timing. That's gold. So what are some of the ways you can apply this today? Well, pay attention to your timing, not just your words and what you say. Be watching your friends, watching those in your class. Are they having a hard time? Are they having a great time? And make sure your words match the situation. Second, you can think, will this help or hurt in the moment? Like, is what you're gonna say gonna help them be encouraged? Or is it gonna hurt them a little bit? Is it gonna be a jab? Because you know, it's a kind of a mean comment. It's not meant to encourage them or make them feel good. Lastly, ask God to help you say the right thing at the right time. This is a really easy prayer. Dear God, help me know the right thing to say at the right time.
