Why Humility Makes You More Likable Than Pride

Hey, carpool crew. Some of you might be pulling on your jacket, some of you might be buckled in the car looking out the window, and some of you might be relaxing, getting ready for a day of fun. No matter where you are, I'm so glad you're here. I'm Pastor Justin and thanks for listening to Carpooling with Jesus on Pure Flix. Today's verse is a reminder that being loud, being full of yourself, being arrogant or prideful might feel strong, but it actually leads to a fall. And humility, well, that's where real wisdom begins. Our verse today is from Proverbs chapter 11, verse two: when arrogance comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom. Solomon's been making comparisons all through Proverbs: wise versus foolish, proud versus humble, discipline versus reckless. And this one hits really hard, in his time and in ours, if we're honest. Arrogance is loud. It brags. It talks over others. It wants everyone to know what you're doing and what you achieved. It acts like it knows everything. And Solomon says it always ends the same way: disgrace. That means embarrassment or regret. You know, when something doesn't go the way you want and it happens in front of a lot of people, it is embarrassing. It's usually something you wish you could redo or take back. But humility, that's different. It listens, it learns, it says, I don't know everything. And that kind of heart is where real wisdom begins. So let's be clear. Confidence is great. I'm confident, my wife is confident, my kids, I want them to be confident. I want you to be confident too, wherever you're listening from. But arrogance is when you act like you're better than others or like you don't need help or correction from anyone. It's the kid who never admits he or she is wrong. It's the person who makes fun of others to look cool. It's the one who acts like rules just don't apply to them. Solomon says that kind of attitude eventually leads to a fall, but the one who walks humbly, he or she becomes wise. If Jesus were sitting with you at lunch today and he saw you trying to prove something to everyone, he might quietly say to you, you don't have to puff yourself up. Just walk with me. Wisdom will follow. Jesus had all the power. He still washed people's feet. He stayed humble even though he had nothing to prove. Think about a basketball player who talks big, never passes, and blames everyone else when things go wrong. Now think of another player just as skilled, but he listens to the coach. He encourages his teammates, he admits his mistakes. Which one do you trust? Which one do you respect more? Whose team would you wanna be on? That's the power of humility. It's not about being weak, it's being wise enough to grow, show kindness to others, and to listen. So what are some ways we can apply this today? First, don't act like you know it all. Be open to learning. Yes, from your parents. Yes, from your teachers. When someone gives you correction, don't get defensive. Don't make excuses. Don't explain it away. Grow from it. Listen and learn. And remember that humility doesn't make you less. It makes you better. The more humble you are, the more people are gonna wanna be around you.
