Why Wisdom Is Better Than Stuff

Hey, carpool crew. Maybe you're sitting at the table finishing your breakfast. Maybe you're in the car watching the world go by, or maybe just hanging out at home on the couch with a blanket. However you're listening, I'm so glad you're here. I'm Pastor Justin, and I'm so thankful you're listening to Carpooling with Jesus. We're in Proverbs for your school life, and today's verse hits especially hard in a world where everyone's talking about the next big thing, but God's word reminds us there's something way more valuable than stuff. Our verse today is from Proverbs chapter eight, verse 11, and here's what it says. For wisdom is better than jewels, and nothing desirable can equal it. See, Proverbs eight is unique. Wisdom is speaking. In this chapter, it's like a voice calling out to people saying, hey, over here. Listen up. I am worth more than anything else you could ever chase. And this idea that wisdom is better than jewels would've landed big in ancient times. Jewels were the most valuable things people owned. So this verse is basically saying, if you had to pick between being wise and being rich, go with wise every time. And yep, Jesus would've known this one and he lived like it. He never chased money, status, or stuff. He chased people's hearts and he used wisdom to reach them. Let's be honest, there's a lot of things we want. A new phone, a new PS five, a cool outfit, maybe a little less homework. But Solomon is saying none of it compares to wisdom because wisdom helps you make the right choices with whatever you have. And when you live wisely, you're actually enjoying life more, not less. It's not wrong to want things, but it's foolish to chase stuff more than you chase wisdom. If Jesus were sitting across from you at the lunch table today, he might say, everything in your life is better when wisdom leads the way. Jesus didn't promise us easy or flashy, but he did promise to give us what we truly need. And wisdom is always on the list. Imagine two kids. One has everything, expensive shoes, the latest tech, all the gear, but makes reckless decisions. He treats people badly, can't control his emotions, just kind of mean. The other doesn't have the fanciest stuff, but he listens. He thinks before he speaks, he does what's right when it's hard. Who would you trust more? Who do you want to become? That's what this verse is talking about. Wisdom wins every time. So what are some ways you can apply this today? First, ask yourself this question. Am I chasing stuff or am I chasing wisdom? Second, choose wisdom. When you're tempted to copy someone just to look cool, just to land that joke, to get the attention, it's not worth it. Last, remember, wisdom helps you enjoy what you have, even if it's not flashy. You don't have to have the nicest stuff to be one of the nicest people. Remember, no matter where you are or how you're listening, God loves you.
