Jonah and Running from God: Listening the First Time

What happens when we ignore what we’re asked to do?

For Parents

This week kicks off the story of Jonah, and today is the runaway start. Jonah hears a clear instruction from God and sails the opposite way. Justin uses everyday pictures kids know, like being asked to clean a room or help a sibling, to make obedience concrete. The big idea is gentle but real: learning to listen the first time at home and at school is practice for listening to God. A warm, low-pressure conversation starter for the car.

The One Thing for the Ride

When God or a parent or teacher asks us to do something, God's hope is that we listen the first time instead of running the other way.

Questions Kids Ask

Why did Jonah run away from God?

God told Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh and warn the people to turn from their evil, but Jonah did not like the people there and did not want God to forgive them, so he got on a ship heading the opposite direction (Jonah 1:1-3). He thought he could hide from God's plan, but you cannot really run from God. God's hope is that we listen the first time instead of running the other way.
