The Prodigal Son, Episode 2: The Older Brother's Story

Hey Carpool Crew. No matter where you are riding today, I am really glad you are here. This is Episode 2 of our five-episode Carpooling with Heroes of the Bible series on one of the most famous stories Jesus ever told, the story of the prodigal son. If you missed yesterday, that is okay. We are hearing the same story five times, but each time from a different point of view. So far, we have ridden along with the younger son, the one who ran away. Today, we are riding with someone who never left at all. The older brother. This story comes from Luke chapter 15, and when Jesus told it, He wanted people to realize that you can be close to God on the outside but far away on the inside. So today, imagine you are riding in the car with the older brother. You are hearing the story through his eyes. Here is how it sounded to him. I was the older brother. The responsible one. The dependable one. In my family, that mattered. A lot. In Bible times, the older son carried the weight of the family. I would inherit most of the land. I would protect the family name. I would take care of my parents as they got older. I did not get to dream about leaving. I stayed. I worked. I obeyed. And when my younger brother asked for his inheritance early, I was furious. I did not say anything out loud, but I felt it. He was disrespecting our father. He was embarrassing our family. And I knew how this would end. When he left, guess who stayed to do the work? Me. I worked the fields. I managed the servants. I carried the responsibility he walked away from. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. And then years. And every single day, I stayed. That is important. Because the older brother's story is not about rebellion. It is about comparison. One night, after a long day of work, I came back toward the house. And I heard music. Loud music. That alone was strange. Big celebrations did not happen without planning. And no one told me anything. Then I heard laughter. I asked a servant what was going on. And that is when I found out. My brother was back. Not punished. Not ignored. Not put to work. Celebrated. That is when something broke inside me. The Bible says I became angry and refused to go in. That matters. Because in that culture, refusing to enter a celebration thrown by your father was a public insult. Everyone would notice. But I did not care. All I could think was this. He wasted everything. I stayed faithful. And somehow, he gets a party? Then my father did something unexpected again. He came out. Just like he ran out to my brother, he came out to me. And I said everything I had been holding in for years. 'Look, I have served you all these years. I never disobeyed you. And you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours comes back after wasting everything, you throw him a party.' Do you hear it? I did not call him my brother. I called him 'this son of yours.' Because comparison turns people into strangers. Here is something kids do not always notice. The older brother was right about some things. His brother did mess up. His brother did waste everything. And what happened did feel unfair. But here is what the older brother missed. He believed obedience earned love. But love was always already there. My father said something gentle and powerful. 'Son, you are always with me. And everything I have is yours.' That means the older brother already had access to joy. He just never asked. The tragedy of the older brother is not that he stayed outside. It is that he never realized he belonged inside all along. This story does not tell us what he chose. Did he go in? Did he stay out? Did he forgive his brother? Jesus left the ending open on purpose. Because the people listening had to decide. And so do we. If you are listening today and you have ever thought, 'I have been good. I have followed the rules. Why does it feel like others get grace easier than me?' This story is for you. The older brother is not a villain. He is a warning. Being close to God does not always mean knowing His heart. God is not impressed by comparison. He is not moved by scorekeeping. He invites both sons into joy. Before you go, remember this. This is still the same story. We have just heard it from a different place. And next time, we are going to hear from the person at the center of it all. The father. The one who ran.
