The Unforgiving Servant, Episode 5: The Listener (Where Are You in the Story?)

Hey, Carpool Crew. I am really glad you are here today. This is Episode 5 and the final episode in our series based on a story Jesus told called The Unforgiving Servant. Before we go any further, let's take a moment and look back at the whole story together. That matters, because Jesus did not tell this story in pieces. He told it all at once, and he wanted the people listening to understand how everything fit together. First, we heard from the servant who was forgiven. He owed the king an amount of money so big it could never be paid back. He begged. The king felt compassion. And the king forgave the entire debt. Then we heard from the fellow servant. He owed a much smaller amount of money. He begged for time. But instead of mercy, he was grabbed, embarrassed, and thrown into prison. Then we heard from the king. The king forgave generously, then later learned that forgiveness had stopped instead of spreading. The king was angry, not because of money, but because mercy had been misunderstood. Then we heard from the other servants. They watched everything happen. They were disturbed by what they saw. They knew something was wrong. And they reported it, because cruelty should not be ignored. Now, in this final episode, we are talking about the listener. That means the people who heard Jesus tell this story. And that matters most of all. When Jesus told this story, he was not telling it for entertainment. He was teaching his disciples how forgiveness works in real life. Just before Jesus told this story, Peter asked him a question. He asked, 'How many times should I forgive someone?' Peter wanted a number. Peter wanted a limit. Jesus answered by telling this story. Because forgiveness is not about counting. It is about the heart. The people listening that day would have felt uncomfortable. They would have nodded during the first part. Of course the king should forgive. That was generous. But then the second part would have hit them. Because now the forgiven servant was acting cruel. And suddenly, everyone listening had to stop and think. Jesus told the story this way so the listeners would ask a question. Who am I in this story? Am I the one who has been forgiven? Am I the one who needs forgiveness? Am I the one refusing to forgive? Am I the one watching how others are treated? Jesus wanted every listener to place themselves inside the story. And now, that includes us. Here is something kids need to understand clearly. Jesus is not saying that forgiveness is easy. Jesus is not saying that what happened did not matter. Jesus is saying that forgiven people forgive. Not because it feels good. Not because it feels fair. But because they remember what it felt like to need mercy. Think about your life. Think about a time when you messed up and someone forgave you. Think about how that felt. Think about the relief. Think about the kindness. Jesus wants that memory to change how you treat other people. When someone says sorry and means it, we forgive. When someone makes a mistake, we don't hold it over them forever. When someone hurts us, we choose not to hurt them back. Forgiveness does not mean pretending something did not happen. It means choosing not to keep punishing someone for it. This story is serious, because forgiveness is serious. Unforgiveness traps people. It spreads anger. It keeps wounds open. Forgiveness allows healing to start. That is why Jesus ended the story the way he did. He wanted the listeners to feel the weight of the choice. Will forgiveness stop with me? Or will it move through me? That is the question Jesus leaves us with. So here is how we finish this series. Not with an answer. But with an invitation. An invitation to forgive the way we have been forgiven. Before we finish this series, let's remember why Jesus told this story. He wanted every listener to see themselves inside it. He wanted forgiven people to forgive. He wanted mercy to move, not stop. This story doesn't end with a neat answer. It ends with a choice. Will forgiveness stop with me? Or will it move through me? That is the question Jesus leaves us with.
