Scared of Being Bullied? What Jesus Would Say

Part of the October What Would Jesus Say series. A free Wednesday CWJ episode revisiting the bullying topic (originally covered as a What Should I Do If bonus the week prior). Pastor Justin walks kids through Psalm 34:18, names that real people in the Bible were bullied too, and lands them in the truth that you do not deserve to be bullied ever.

For Parents

If your kid is dealing with a bully (at school, online, on a team), this episode meets them there. Pastor Justin walks them through Psalm 34:18 and names the truth: your kid doesn't deserve it, and Jesus has been there too (mocked, spit on, beaten). After it ends, ask your kid directly if anyone is making them feel small, and give them permission to tell the truth without fear of getting in trouble.

The One Thing for the Ride

You do not deserve to be bullied ever, and Jesus cares about what you're going through.

Key Takeaways

Try This Week

  1. Tell an adult. A parent, a teacher, a counselor, a pastor. You're not tattling. You're telling the truth so someone can help you.
  2. Don't fight with fists or mean words. Walk away when you can. Run away when you have to. Use the courage to tell the truth to an adult.
  3. Remember what Jesus says about you. You are loved. You are made in the image of God. You're chosen. You are strong. You are not the names a bully calls you.

Talk It Over

Questions Kids Ask

What does the Bible say to a kid who is being bullied?

You do not deserve to be bullied ever, and the Bible promises that the Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Real people in the Bible like David, Joseph, and even Jesus were mocked and mistreated, so Jesus does not just understand your hurt, he has been there. The most important thing you can do is tell a trusted adult, walk away from a fight when you can, and remember you are loved and made on purpose.
