Hey, carpool crew. I'm Pastor Justin, and today we're talking about something that makes a lot of kids nervous, and honestly some adults too. What if I'm scared to pray out loud? This whole month we've been looking at what Jesus would say about the things that scare us. So maybe when someone asks, who wants to pray, you instantly look at the floor, hoping they don't call on you. Or maybe you think, what if I mess up? What if I sound weird? What if I forget what to say, or someone laughs? Let's be real, praying in your head is one thing, but praying out loud in front of other people, even family, can feel really intimidating. So let's talk about where that fear comes from and what Jesus would say to you about it. Romans 8, verse 26 says this. "The Spirit himself intercedes for us, even when we don't know what to pray for." And the Bible does it again, says exactly what we're looking for, because this fear really isn't about praying. It's about performance. You're afraid of saying the wrong words, or forgetting what you meant to say, being judged or misunderstood, or looking less spiritual than the kid who always prays big, perfect-sounding prayers, at least in your opinion. But here's the truth. There's no such thing as a big, perfect-sounding prayer, and prayer is not a performance. Romans 8:26 says that even when we don't know what to pray, the Holy Spirit helps us. God's Spirit takes the messy, mumbled, nervous prayers and translates them into something beautiful. Jesus never said, only pray if you know how to sound holy. He said, come to me like a child, be honest, and keep it real. If Jesus were sitting with you during a small group time and your leader said, would you like to close us in prayer, and you looked down at your shoes, I think Jesus would gently nudge you and say, you don't need perfect words. You just need an honest heart. I'm listening to your heart, not your grammar, not the words you say. So take a breath and just talk to me like you would a friend. Let me tell you a story about Amari. She and her mom shared this story with me on Instagram. She's one of our listeners from Louisiana. She got picked to pray in her church class. Her heart started racing. She opened her mouth and froze, and then blurted out, thank you for, um, the donuts and for Jesus, amen. She felt so embarrassed, but her leader smiled and said, that was perfect, you just talked to God, and that's what he wants. And the best part, everyone else relaxed too, because Amari reminded them that prayer isn't about nailing it with some big, long, spiritual-sounding prayer. It's about saying what's on your heart, what's on your mind. So if you're scared to pray out loud and you want to face that, here's something you could do. Start small. Try praying one short sentence out loud. You can even practice in your bedroom. Second, practice at the dinner table or breakfast table with your family. If you can pray with your family, it will start building confidence so you can pray other places too. And here's the last thing. Don't compare. Never compare your prayers to someone else's. Your voice, your mind, your thoughts are your own. Jesus doesn't need big words, and he's not comparing what you say to anyone else. You don't have to be fearless to pray out loud. You just need to be willing to try. And every time you do, you're building spiritual muscles, stepping out in courage, and growing closer to Jesus. Remember, no matter where you are or how you're listening, God loves you. And parents, if you like today's episode, consider texting a link to a friend or sharing about it in a Facebook group. Helping our kids learn how to pray is something every parent wants to figure out together. Now, before you go, let's answer this question. What's one sentence you could say if someone asked you to pray out loud today? I'll see you tomorrow on Carpooling with Jesus.
