Hey, Carpool Crew! It's day two of Proverbs for Your School Life, one thing to go do every single day, all month long. And today we are talking about that moment when the teacher asks, does everybody get it... and you nod... and you do not get it. I'm Pastor Justin, and before we jump in, let me give a big shout-out to Genesis and Jasmine out in Miami, Florida. Genesis and Jasmine, I'm so glad you're in the carpool today. And this episode is all about faking it when we don't get it. We've all done the nod. Let's jump in with the one thing I want you to remember for the ride: the smartest kid keeps listening. Yesterday was about what you keep out of your head. Today is about what you let in on purpose. Listen to this from Proverbs 1:5. "Let a wise person listen and increase learning, and let a discerning person obtain guidance." Discerning is a fancy way of saying you can tell a good idea from a bad one. And look at who this verse is for. Not the kid who's behind. The wise one. Even the wise kid keeps listening. Proverbs 1:5 is the front page of Solomon's book. Solomon was the king people lined up to see. The Queen of Sheba loaded up camels with gold and spices and traveled for months just to ask him questions. And the man everyone came to for answers opens his book by saying a wise person listens and keeps learning. The smartest person in the room is the one still asking questions. If Jesus were sitting next to you in the car right now, He would say, "When I was twelve, I sat with the teachers in the temple, listening and asking questions. That's how I spent My time. Ask your question today. I love watching you learn." It's math class. The board is covered in fractions, and your teacher asks, any questions? Silence. And every kid in that room is doing the same math in their head, and it is not fractions. It's this: if I raise my hand, everyone will know I don't get it. Then one kid raises a hand and says, can you show that one more time? And you can feel half the room exhale, because they needed to see it one more time too. Nobody thinks that kid is behind. By Friday, that's the kid who gets it. So today, here's the one thing you could try. In one class, ask your teacher one real question instead of tuning out. Not a stalling question. A real one. Borrow this one if you need it: "Can you show that one more time?" Or this one: "What does that word mean?" Teachers love that question, by the way. It tells them you are actually with them. And yes, grown-ups do the nod too. I've done it in meetings. Don't tell my kids. Asking a question isn't announcing what you don't know. It's how the wise kid stays wise.
