What Does It Mean to Be Great? Jesus Teaches James and John

In today’s Carpooling with Jesus, James and John ask Jesus a bold question: “Can we sit at your right and left in your kingdom?” (Mark 10:37 CSB) They wanted to be important—but Jesus gave them (and us!) a better picture of greatness.

For Parents

James and John wanted the top seats in Jesus' kingdom, and Justin uses their bold request to flip how kids think about greatness. Instead of fame, trophies, or being first, Jesus points to serving. The story of Angela returning a dropped wallet with no applause makes the lesson land. This is a chance to talk with your kids about the quiet, unnoticed ways they can lift others up, the way Jesus did.

The One Thing for the Ride

Questions Kids Ask

What does it mean to be great in God's eyes?

When James and John asked for the top seats of honor, Jesus taught, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant (Mark 10:43). In God's kingdom greatness is not about being first or famous, it is about serving others and putting them first.
