Scared of the Dark? What Jesus Would Say

The kickoff episode of the October What Would Jesus Say series. For kids scared of the dark (and the adults who are too, honestly). Pastor Justin walks them through John 8:12, where Jesus calls himself the light of the world, and lands them in the truth that the same light that lit up the ancient world lights up your kid's heart in their dark room.

For Parents

If your kid is scared of dark rooms, dark hallways, or the trip down to the basement, this episode meets them there. Pastor Justin walks them through John 8:12, where Jesus calls himself the light of the world, and lands them in the truth that Jesus doesn't make fun of the fear. He steps into it with peace. After it ends, walk the dark hallway together once and pray as you go.

The One Thing for the Ride

You don't have to be afraid of the dark. Jesus is right there, and his light in you is stronger.

Key Takeaways

Try This Week

  1. Get a nightlight. There's nothing wrong with one, especially if you get a fun Jesus-themed one. When you see it, say a quick prayer: 'Jesus, I know you're close.'
  2. Memorize John 8:12 to remind you that Jesus is with you.
  3. When you feel fear creeping in, picture Jesus shining his light right into that darkness. You're not alone.

Questions Kids Ask

What does the Bible say to kids who are scared of the dark?

The dark can feel scary, but Jesus said, 'I am the light of the world,' and anyone who follows him will not walk in darkness (John 8:12). His light may not switch on your hallway lamp, but it lights up your heart so you know you are never alone. A nightlight is perfectly fine, and so is whispering, 'Jesus, be my light,' when fear starts creeping in.
